Grown with Purpose

Cosmos began with a 1,000 sq foot yard and the freedom to plant as many flowers as we wanted.

Five years later, our love for growing flowers brought us to two and a half acres of pasture nestled within the hills of Vaca Valley. Our field is small, but growing. We farm with a mission to be stewards of the soil, to cultivate the biodiversity of our field, and to give as much back to the land as it provides for our flowers. Our beds are prepared without tillage, our seedlings are fed with compost and non-synthetic soil amendments, and our flowers are protected not by pesticides, but by a robust and balanced ecosystem. Each seed is planted, and every stem harvested, by hand.

Locally grown blooms each hold their own history, personality, and season. We hope that, through our farm, we can share the beauty and uniqueness of this amazing world of flowers.

What's Happening on the Farm

We had an extremely short cool season thanks to the heat dome that rocketed daytime temperatures to the high 80's, and we just managed to get the last of our cool season seedlings into the ground. Our spring bulbs and corms are in full bloom: the tulips are harvested and tucked away in our makeshift cooler, our small patch of daffodils are reaching their peak (they've gotten cramped, and we will divide them in the fall for field planting so they have room to multiply), and our ranunculus are ramping up. Our first succession of anemones are going dormant, and while our later successions are blooming, their stems are still short! We are hoping that the cool nights will prevent them from going dormant before they give us a nice full flush.

In addition to planting, we've got some work planned for the farm over the next few months: rigging up more irrigation, putting in a new field and expanding the deer fence, organizing our compost system, and making headway on our walk-in cooler. As the season ramps up, so do the lessons learned: the leaf spot on our cerinthe and the botrytis on our earliest succession of anemones tell us that we will need to give our plantings some more space next year, and we had quite the showing of thrips on our white anemones. We will treat with beneficial nematodes this fall.

As our earliest spring flowers are winding down, our overwintered hardy annuals are starting to bloom. Sweet peas, calendula, statice, and lupine buds are popping open… and our dahlias are starting to sprout! It seems as if we barely have time to enjoy the beauties we planted in the fall before it's time to seed our warm season crops, and in the next week we will be starting our zinnias, celosia, and basil. Our sunflowers got a head start from a planting in February — let's see if we can get some blooms by Mother's Day!

Flower stems will be wrapped in a compostable hydration wrap, Kraft flower paper, and a Kraft paper bag.

No need to be home! Your flowers will be left on your porch or doorstep in a cool, shaded location if possible.

No problem! Email us at sarah@cosmosflowerfarm.com. Because we harvest to order, please cancel by the Thursday before your next delivery or you will be charged for the delivery.

We want to make it right! Please call or text us within 24 hours at (530) 505-1183 or email us at sarah@cosmosflowerfarm.com so we can troubleshoot.

As a regenerative farm, we don't spray chemicals or use pesticides. While we do inspect our flowers for bugs (and most are gone after 24 hours in the cooler), they are part of our farming ecosystem, and you may see an occasional one on your flowers.

Flowers are sensitive to heat, so please provide a cool place near your doorstep or porch if possible. After you receive your flowers, trim the stems and place them in cool water and the flower food provided. After about three days, change the water daily for the best vase life. All flower wrapping/packaging is compostable. Flower paper is recyclable.

Non-imported flowers typically have a vase life of about seven days, but some may last longer. To prolong the life of your flowers, keep the water clean by changing daily and keep your flowers away from extreme heat.

As a very small business we currently limit our subscriptions to ten subscribers per season. If you would like to be notified if a subscription becomes available, please send us an email at sarah@cosmosflowerfarm.com!

We are still in the process of building our space and currently do not allow visitors, but we do plan to build a self-serve farm stand in the near future — stay tuned!
